A shared path for a greater good
Friday, April 7, 2023, at Saint Mary’s School in Limassol, a charity bazaar was organized for the poor and earthquake victims of Syria. Lent is a propitious time to raise awareness, both large and small, especially with regard to the most suffering that this year were the earthquake victims, our neighbours.
All the teachers and students of the school very willingly accepted the teaching of the Church which invites them to an adequate preparation for Holy Lent, with a thorough dedication to prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We have tried to sensitize our children to live fasting as a personal attitude with spiritual and material fruits, for the benefit of the most needy.
Inspired by this thought, the teachers worked hard to motivate the students to participate in our market, while we sisters asked some benefactors to offer us their products. The nuns of the community set to work preparing and decorating the Easter candles, much used by us. Others have prepared bracelets, handbags and packs for bingo. The Pizza Hut had the generosity to offer 400 pieces of pizza and sent of its staff to help us sell it. The baker, our friend, offered 150 sandwiches to make hot dogs. The convent kitchen has turned into a real crepe workshop. In short, many voluntary hands have offered themselves to prepare something good and thus contribute to the success of this charitable work.
A group of the girls of the seventh class took responsibility for the sale of various foods and items while another group organized games for the children of the elementary school. The bazaar did not miss very interesting books and toys. At 10:30, the courtyard was filled with students passing from table to table, choosing and tasting foods and sweets.
It was a very interesting day. Everyone was excited, and the little ones wanted to spend everything, every penny. The kindergarten also gave its contribution without being among the great. Thus, our desire for good was accepted and realized. Indeed the good unites, grows and expands beyond borders.
We thank the Lord for this work and for the fact that there is no shortage of people with a great heart who know how to offer and give themselves largely for the good of their neighbour. May the good Lord, merciful Father, reward all those who have contributed and taken part in our Franciscan market.
